If you live in the area and have an interest in art, the Social Art Mornings held each Monday (excepting Public Holidays) at the Rutherford Community Centre, are worth a visit.  In the short time I have been attending, I have found it to be a very friendly, helpful group.

Monday Social Art
This is a vibrant and helpful group with a sense of fun – what more could you want!  The group is purely social, where you can regularly relax and paint – if you need help there is always someone who is able to point you in the right direction.
This group is exhibiting their work at Rutherford Library, opening 16 April 2012, all work is for sale.

MRSA Artist Featured

One of our artists, Christine Lantry, was featured in Artist’s Palette No. 105 – “A Moment in Time”. Featured is a selection of her artworks accompanying the story of her journey with art.  Also featured is a demonstration using watercolour and gouache featuring  ”Sam the Aristocratic Cat” where Christine demonstrates her technique to paint the magnificent Sam.  Congratulations, Christine.

 MRSA Workshop with Dorothy Compton

Twelve of our Members attended a workshop with Dorothy Compton, the media being Pen and Wash, the Maitland Region Art Gallery allowed us to hold it in their art rooms.  We all gained valuable knowledge from this workshop ; we also enjoyed lunch at the Seraphine CafĂ© at the Gallery.

If members are interested in attending a workshop, please let our Workshop Co-ordinator know as these workshops are great value.

MRSA Artists
Fundraiser for Tenambit Primary School Art Exhibition, 23 and 24 March 2012

A workshop was conducted by three of our MRSA Artists involving a group of Tenambit Public School Pupils.

Results of that workshop

As well as artworks submitted by MRSA artists, each child in the school submitted their own artwork, which was duly mounted for display by staff.   Further support was given by the P&C and parents.  Here is a small sample of artwork submitted by the children, which incidentally was quality work.

Success of a Local Artist

A well-known artist in the Maitland area, Graham Cox, has his winning entry featured in the Australian Artist magazine’s Art Prize Challenge No. 46, the entry featuring one of his favourite areas, the Blue Mountains,   named “Beyond Katoomba”.  It appeared in the December 2011 edition of Australian Artist.

As a result of this win, Graham has an article in ”Australian Artist” No. 334, April 2012 discussing traditional landscape painting and in his preferred medium of oils with a demonstration titles “Little Cottage in the Woods” with further photos of his paintings and comments illustrating how to achieve effective landscapes.  Congratulations Graham!

Some of the above subjects, you might notice are not of Australian origin, I belong to an online British art group that draws its members worldwide, the advantage of this, I find, is painting unfamiliar subjects has forced me to really observant, this is quite beneficial.  Attending the MRSA  Monday Social Art group has also been very beneficial, regular painting sessions coupled with good company and generous help are all making their mark.  Regular workshops arranged by the MRSA extend artistic experience even more.  I find I am painting more at home, and would recommend these activities to other artists.   To those who might be thinking of taking up art, take the plunge, there is plenty of help and encouragement out there.
